Many of the rock climbers I know have left facebook and social media in general and for good reason. Even if you are fine with mega-corporations selling your personal information and mining it to figure out how better to addict you to it; the adds are annoying. The fediverse tries to solve those issues by giving power to the people. You can join a server hosted by a kind soul or start up your own. Don’t like the rules? Join a different server or make up your own. Don’t like the way the app is displayed? Download or make another and still follow all of the people you love. Its like cell phones operators, Verizon can call Sprint whether you’re on android or Iphone. Facebook doesn’t follow reddit users but those in the fediverse can follow each other even through different apps due to the glory of communication standards. I like having options and security.
